Can one live a modern life, without a smartphone?

April 9th, 2012 // Filed in Musings // 0 comments

My smartphone journey began with a brand new iPhone 3G in 2008, then on to a Nexus One in 2010, which I currently still sling. It has come time to upgrade, but I find myself using a smartphone and all its connectivity less and less. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a highly technical guy. Maybe it’s because of the amount of time I spend immersed in technology, that I find I need to step away from it.

The deer in my backyard

The Cosmos

The same TV that brought us images of the moon landing, now brings us images of GTL and families with 19 kids. Our youth are consumed by ultra-popular pop stars, manufactured to keep them mesmerized. Nobody cares for science anymore; knowledge is lame. The government cuts NASA's budget because it's unnecessary. There's no cosmic dreaming anymore, so people turn to their reality tv about children in beauty pageants, or lol endlessly at a video of kittens someone posted on Facebook. Maybe there's a select few who still stare at the moon, dreaming of exploring the space above this consumerized, corporate earth - but everyone else doesn’t care, as long as they can text message, and like their lives into a shallow, useless oblivion. I'm cynical - but I don't care. I still dream of the cosmos.
